American Farm Bureau Farmer Idea Exchange and County Activities of Excellence Awards
Individuals that are ingenuitive and creative on their farms are encouraged to apply for the American Farm Bureau Farmer Idea Exchange. The program is geared to surface inventions, equipment modifications, innovative crops, marketing techniques, management systems and farming practices developed by farmers and ranchers. It is designed to encourage Farm Bureau members to share their innovative ideas and help farmers find ways to cut costs, become more efficient, improve the environment and improve their net income.
Farmer Idea Exchange rules information can be found HERE. The online entry form (preferred method) for 2008 can be found HERE. You can also print it out and complete it HERE. Additionally, participants need to sign a form stating the originality of the idea, which can be found HERE.
Information and application forms for the 2008 County Activities of Excellence (CAE) are located below. Originally known as the County Farm Bureau Idea Exchange, the program now focuses on the priority areas of the organization. The purpose of the program is the recognize and share successful county Farm Bureau programs and activities. Additional rules and information can be found HERE.

Here is a list of training workshops available that provide interactive learning activities for new and experienced county board members. These topics provide the opportunity for Farm Bureau leaders to gain information about their responsibilities and hone their leadership skills.
Dimensions of Farm Bureau - Learn about your county, state and American Farm Bureau in ways you may not be familiar with. This interactive instruction communicates the basic purpose and principles of Farm Bureau, identifies the relationship among the county, state and national Farm Bureau’s, recognizes and builds the basic elements of the policy development process and recognizes Farm Bureau beliefs. A 25 minute video is included in this instruction. Total training time is 90 minutes.
Board Member Roles and Responsibilities - Develop the necessary skills and leadership for an effective county board of directors. Know how to identify the legal and financial responsibilities of board members. Identify the guidelines of board members and their standards of conduct. Establish an orientation program for new board members and understand the role of the state Farm Bureau Field Representative. There is a 10 minute video. Total training time is 80-90 minutes.
Conducting Effective Board Meetings - See a simply step-by-step process for conducting effective county board meetings. You will identify the need for meeting preparation and follow up. You will apply suggested methods of taking meeting minutes and listing proposed meeting agenda items. You will come to know the duties of the chairman and properly following parliamentary procedure. There is a 10 minute video and total training time is approx. 1 hour.
Committee Selection and Job Description - Do you need to organize a committee? Does everyone know and understand their job description? This instruction will stress the value of using committee reports and applying considerations when appointing committees. Support must be given for written guidelines and tools for committees. An interaction discussion will take place on the five elements of a job description. It is important to have performance reviews and written job descriptions for committees. Several video’s can accompany this instruction and can last as long as needed.
Team Building - If you want to make something good a little better, consider this instruction. This training will assess your team using the team development scale. Come to know the two functions of a team and recognize the four stages of a newly formed team. Here, we will identify the recipe for successful teams and leave with a complete commitment to action. Total training time is one hour.
Financial Management - One of the most important lessons learned in a voluntary organization is financial management. Come to recognize the need for financial statements and accrual versus cash flow statements. Do you know how to interpret net worth, income and expense statements? What about interpreting comparative statements, previous year, budget and year-to-date statements. Finally, learn how to apply the relationship of budgeting and planning. This instruction can be geared towards an individual or group. Total time preferred is 90 to 120 minutes.
Communication - Learn what it takes to communicate effectively. This training provides the following: recognizing the importance of audience analysis, apply a three-part structure of a speech, illustrates hwo to give a speech, how to avoid stage fright, identifies the importance of a good speech introduction and conclusion and allows for practicing speaking skills. There is a 30 minute video. Total training time is 90 minutes.
Farm Bureau Agricultural Contact Team (FBACT) - How do you find time communicate to your Senator and Representative? Is there a central place to go and learn about legislation affecting my business? How can I effectively communicate my views to my representative? These questions can easily be answered by participating in a FBACT training instruction. FBACT is American Farm Bureau Federations method of informing Farm Bureau members on national issues and allowing these same Farm Bureau members to efficiently communicate to their respective congressmen. This training is offered to an individual or a group of Farm Bureau members. Internet access is required.
